Hurricane Earl and What You Can Do to Prepare For the Impact in Massachusetts and New Hampshire

As of late yesterday, September 2, at 3:25 PM, Governor Deval Patrick has declared a State of Emergency for the entire state of Massachusetts. Hurricane Earl will likely produce high winds, heavy rain, and coastal storm surge. Impacts from Hurricane Earl have the capacity to cause flooding, widespread power outages, and debris-removal challenges for portions of the state.

Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has offered personal preparedness tips for all citizens in the Commonwealth. “Every home and business should have a stocked emergency supply kit that could be used for any emergency, regardless of the time of year,” states MEMA Acting Director Kurt Schwartz. “Everyone should keep certain items around the house and workplace in the event you are isolated for three to five days without power.” Read the rest of this entry »

Exhibit is a Tribute to American Liberty in Chelmsford, MA

Daniel Varoujan Hejinian, a resident of Chelmsford, MA, came to America 30 years ago from Soviet Armenia. He loves America, his adopted land, and celebrates it in Colors of Liberty, an exhibit on display from September 4 – 30 at the Chelmsford Public Library.

Daniel also founded Peace of Art, Inc., a non-profit educational organization that uses art to bring awareness of the human condition. This past April, he was honored at the Statehouse for his efforts to promote peace through his art.

Colors of Liberty was first exhibited last September at the Statehouse. On that same day Daniel unveiled his painting “The Missing Stripes,” which he has dedicated to the victims of September 11.

The painting will be on display in Chelmsford, and Hejinian invites visitors to the gallery on Saturday, September 11, from 2:00 – 4:00 PM to meet him and other dignitaries. For more information on Peace of Art, please click here.

Enterprise Bank Partners with Anton’s Cleaners for “COATS for KIDS” Drive

Anton's "COATS for KIDS" DriveAfter Labor Day, Enterprise Bank will partner with Anton’s Cleaners for their “COATS for KIDS” drive. From Tuesday, September 7, through Friday, October 1, individuals will have the opportunity to drop winter coats off to any Enterprise Bank location. Though the program’s official title is “COATS for KIDS,” coats are welcome for all ages, male and female.

Since the program began in 1994, Anton’s has collected, cleaned free of charge, and distributed over 620,000 gently worn winter coats to men, women, and children who are in need of one. Coats are distributed through many non-profit agencies in our communities including MA/NH Coalition for the Homeless, Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, United Way, and many more. Air Force Performers Bring Two Free Shows to Lowell, MA

Thanks to United States Air Force performers, local audiences will have the opportunity to enjoy two free, fun, family-friendly concerts at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium.

Tops in Blue, the Air Force’s international touring company, will be playing at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium on Wednesday, September 1, at 7:00 PM. The Band of Liberty, a touring band based at Hanscom Air Force Base, will be playing on Sunday, October 3, at 3:00 PM.

Tops in Blue, founded 57 years ago, is like “an Air Force-wide talent show,” Capt. Dave Alpar told the Lowell Sun. “It’s comprised of doctors, pilots, airmen, and others, all amateurs who audition for spots in the company, are selected for their ability to entertain, then tour the world for a year, doing the show.”

Alpar commands and conducts the Band of Liberty, one of 13 regional bands located at Air Force bases around the nation. They’re comprised of professional musicians, all Air Force personnel, whose full-time jobs are to perform. Read the rest of this entry »

Free Senior Fitness Program in Methuen, MA

The Senior Fitness Program is a free five-week program to help introduce seniors to healthy exercise. It will begin on Tuesday, September 7 and run every Tuesday until October 5 from 1:00 – 2:00 PM.

The program is open to all seniors 62 years of age and older and is designed to be fun for all fitness levels. Each week a different type of exercise will be highlighted:

  • September 7 – Zumba
  • September 14 – Yoga
  • September 21 – Walk track
  • September 28 – Circuit weights

Lowell General Hospital and
the American Heart Association to present the 2010 Lifestyle Change Award

This year at the Annual Merrimack Valley Start! Heart Walk, Lowell General Hospital and the American Heart Association will recognize a member of the community with the 2010 Lifestyle Change Award.

The award will go to a winner who has made a positive change in their health and their life. Those in the community are encouraged to consider the initiative and nominate someone who truly demonstrates improvement on personal quality of life and wellness.

Whether it is weight loss or quitting a habit such as smoking, nominees should be those who have taken a step and a chance at changing their lives in a positive way. These individuals don’t just benefit themselves; they are an encouraging example and a positive influence for the whole community.

“The Lifestyle Change Award should inspire everyone in the community to engage in regular exercise and healthier eating habits,” said Dr. Wayne Pasanen of Lowell General Hospital and the honorary chair of this year’s Heart Walk.  “Promoting personal health and wellness is key to disease prevention.” Read the rest of this entry »

Food Drive to Benefit Lazarus House Ministries Food Pantry to Be Held in North Andover, MA

Every week between 450 and 500 families come to the St. Martha Food Pantry, one of four food programs offered by Lazarus House Ministries, on Hampshire Street in Lawrence, MA. The people come to get canned goods, bread, fresh vegetables, and dairy products to supplement the small amount of groceries they are able to purchase. However, the shelves are too often bare, even several hours before the pantry opens at 9:30 AM on Wednesdays.

Ken Campbell, Food Coordinator for Lazarus House Ministries, a non-profit organization that works with the poor and homeless, is partnering up with the Eagle Tribune to restock the shelves. The newspaper will be hosting a food drive this Saturday, August 28, from 10 AM – 3 PM at its offices, located at 100 Turnpike Street in North Andover, MA. Read the rest of this entry »

Andover Resident to Participate in Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk in Memory of Sister

On Sunday, September 12, 2010, Carolyn Ciampa of Andover, MA will be walking 13.1 miles in the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk in memory of her younger sister Lauren, who lost her battle to cancer in May 2009 at the age of 21. Her team, known as The Krazy Kileys, will consist of her older sister Adrienne, parents Sheila and Frank, aunts, uncles, cousins, and family friends. Last year the team consisted of over 50 people and raised over $45,000.

A 2006 Andover High School graduate, Lauren went on to Bentley College and had plans on transferring to Villanova University in the fall of 2007, when the grim health news was delivered. She was diagnosed with Sacroma cancer in July of 2007. She enjoyed playing field hockey and softball and was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox. Lauren was the kind of person who always put others before herself. She had a warm heart and was very ambitious. Read the rest of this entry »

Westford, MA Native Looking Forward to Assignment with Peace Corps

Elizabeth Miller, a native of Westford, MA, is currently on her way to Saint Lucia to begin a week long orientation for the Peace Corps. From there she will depart for her assignment in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, with no plans on returning home for more than two years. Miller will spend the next three months living with a host family familiarizing herself with the culture and language.

Miller is a 2010 graduate of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in crime and justice. After eight months of writing essays, interviewing and passing a number of tests, including a medical, a legal, and a dental, she was notified of her acceptance. After training, Miller will begin working with at-risk youths with a focus on HIV awareness, employment skills, basic literacy, internet technology, and women’s empowerment. Annual McDonald’s/Boys and Girls Club of Salem Golf Classic in Salem, NH

The 32nd Annual McDonald’s/Boys and Girls Club of Salem Golf Classic  The 32nd Annual McDonald’s/Boys and Girls Club of Salem Golf Classic is scheduled to take place on Monday, September 22, 2010 at the Windham Country Club in Windham, NH. The tournament begins at 1:30 PM with a shotgun start. The day will conclude with a social hour followed by an awards banquet. All proceeds benefit the Boys and Girls Club.

The McDonald’s/Boys and Girls Club of Salem Golf Classic is one of the longest running tournaments in the Merrimack Valley. Foursome slots are available and reservations are being taken on a first come/first served basis.
