Volunteers in Billerica, MA Honored for Work with Elders

On Saturday, September 25, residents in Billerica, MA who have offered their  time to help the elderly in town gathered at the senior center, where a Council on Aging (COA) volunteer recognition ceremony luncheon was held in their honor.

The luncheon, which attracted 104 volunteers, was named after the late Carmela “Chickey” Grieco. Chickey was an important person in the COA community who dedicated countless hours to improving the lives of others.

Among the COA’s 178 volunteers, a total of 2,750 hours a month are given to a variety of different activities, as well as to the needs of the elderly. The value of this time accounts for a total of $680,000- an amount that is priceless to the recipients.

Donna Popkin, director of the COA, introduced members of Grieco’s family at the beginning of the ceremony and thanked the attendees for their dedication to making a difference. Whether answering the phone at the front desk of the senior center or giving a ride to a senior in need, these volunteers provide a wide variety of services to the community.
