On Saturday, May 14, mail carriers around the country will not only be picking up the mail, but donated canned goods too. This Saturday marks the National Association of Letter Carriers 19th annual “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive, the nation’s largest one-day food drive.
Each year, residents are asked to leave a canned good by the mail box and mail carriers will then deliver the donation to local food pantries. The food is donated locally so that individuals can contribute to their neighbors and anyone else in need of assistance.
Last year alone, Stamp Out Hunger collected 77.1 million pounds of food in a single day, surpassing a landmark total of over one billion pounds of donated food since the project was launched in 1992. This year, the group hopes to surpass last year’s record donation, as food assistance has never been in greater demand.
